Two different questions hide inside the labels

A miner performs repeated calculations for a particular mining algorithm. Its deployment describes where and how it operates; its cooling describes how heat leaves the equipment. Home and industrial describe deployment. Air, hydro, and immersion describe cooling. These labels overlap: a small home ASIC can be air cooled, and an industrial facility can use any of the three cooling approaches.

Start by describing your available space, electrical supply, climate, and reason for mining. A machine that fits on a shelf may still be unsuitable for that room. Cooling equipment and installation requirements belong in the decision alongside the miner itself.

Home mining starts with the room

Home equipment often prioritizes manageable sound, compact size, or useful heating. Those priorities can reduce available hashrate. Canaan's Mini 3 documentation, for example, distinguishes operating modes with different heating and noise behavior. A home label does not establish one fixed noise level across every setting.

Consider where the heat goes during warm weather, whether someone sleeps nearby, and whether the household supply can support continuous operation. A desktop learning device and a miner marketed as a room heater serve different purposes. Heat is useful only when you actually need it; unwanted heat creates another cooling requirement.

Industrial mining starts with the site

Industrial deployments are planned around electrical distribution, ventilation or liquid cooling, network access, servicing, and many machines operating together. A conventional industrial air-cooled ASIC can impose substantial power and sound requirements; Canaan's A1326 specifications illustrate why the exact product sheet matters. Moving such a machine into a home does not change its requirements.

Evaluate the whole installation: equipment purchase, electrical work, heat removal, maintenance access, and downtime. A larger hashrate number does not show whether the location can run the miner reliably or whether total costs will be covered.

Air cooling: heat leaves in moving air

Fans move air through heatsinks and carry heat away. The room then needs a route for that warmed air to leave without returning straight to the intake. Dust and restricted airflow can undermine cooling. BITMAIN's handling guidance emphasizes clear ventilation and periodic cleaning.

Air cooling avoids an external liquid circuit, but fans and facility ventilation still make sound. Do not enclose an air-cooled miner in an unventilated soundproof box. Even a small Bitaxe Gamma needs active cooling; a heatsink by itself is insufficient according to its project documentation.

Hydro cooling: the miner belongs to a liquid system

In hydro designs, coolant travels through a dedicated internal heat-transfer circuit and carries heat to external equipment. It is not an instruction to submerge the miner. The complete installation needs circulation and a way to release or reuse the collected heat.

BITMAIN's S21 Hyd. guide specifies coolant quality, flow, temperature, pressure, and electrical requirements. These are model-specific engineering limits, not settings to copy into a different miner. Its instructions also require established coolant conditions before operation.

Include pumps, pipes, heat rejection, leak monitoring, and servicing in your comparison. Liquid cooling can move noise away from the miner, but the surrounding system can still contain noisy equipment.

Immersion cooling: approved hardware in approved fluid

Immersion places compatible equipment in a purpose-designed bath of electrically insulating cooling fluid. This differs from hydro cooling's enclosed circuit. The fluid absorbs heat, and the installation must transfer that heat onward. A tank alone cannot remove a continuous heat load indefinitely.

Oil cooling commonly means immersion cooling with a compatible dielectric fluid approved by the manufacturer. It does not mean using cooking oil or pouring water onto electronics.

BITMAIN's S21 Imm. manual requires immersion during operation and specifies oil properties. Its requirements apply to that product. They do not approve dipping an ordinary air-cooled miner, power supply, or control board into an arbitrary liquid.

Confirm hardware, fluid, seals, cables, servicing procedures, and warranty compatibility together. Account for pumps, heat exchangers, fluid handling, and access to heavy or hot equipment. Reduced onboard fan noise does not make the entire installation silent or maintenance free.

Compare systems using the same boundary

Read the exact model and revision documents before comparing headline figures. Ask whether quoted power covers the miner at the wall or also includes pumps and external fans. Check the operating mode, ambient conditions, and test conditions behind noise or efficiency claims.

Make a short site checklist before choosing equipment:

  • Can the electrical installation support the specified voltage, phase, current, and continuous load?
  • Can the cooling system remove heat in the hottest conditions expected at the location?
  • Are the miner, cooling equipment, connectors, and fluids explicitly compatible?
  • Is there room to inspect, maintain, and safely isolate the system?

Keep installation within qualified hands

Have qualified professionals assess mains wiring, protection, grounding, and any required circuit changes. Do not modify live mains equipment, open energized power supplies, or improvise plugs and adapters. Follow the exact shutdown and isolation procedure before maintenance; cooling systems may require their own shutdown sequence.

Choose equipment whose requirements your location can support. A small, well-understood setup can teach more than a powerful machine that repeatedly overheats or must remain switched off.
