Two different kinds of equipment

An ASIC is a specialised chip built for a particular computing task. Mining ASICs are designed around specific algorithms. A Bitcoin SHA-256 miner cannot become a miner for every other algorithm simply by changing a pool address. Matching the algorithm is the starting point; confirm support for the exact device, firmware, coin, and pool as well.

A GPU is a graphics processor that can run a wider range of computing software. That flexibility can be useful, but it does not make a GPU competitive for every mining network. Bitcoin mining is dominated by specialised hardware. Ethereum mainnet uses proof of stake, so old guides showing GPU mining of ETH are no longer instructions for mining on that network.

Compare compatible measurements

Hashrate measures attempts per second, but a hash from one algorithm is not the same workload as a hash from another. Do not rank unrelated devices just because one number has more zeros. Within the same algorithm, examine sustained hashrate, power at the wall, efficiency, and the conditions under which the manufacturer measured them.

Read what is included in the purchase. A GPU setup can need a host computer, power supply, frame, software configuration, and cooling. An ASIC may need particular connectors, electrical service, or a dedicated cooling system. Include space, sound, repair access, and spare-part availability in the comparison.

Make a short equipment brief

Write a one-page brief before selecting a model. State your purpose, compatible network, operating location, energy budget, and how you would stop or resell the project. Flexibility, efficiency, and low purchase price are different qualities; decide which constraints actually govern your plan.

  • Verify current network and pool support from official documentation.
  • Use the exact hardware revision and operating mode in comparisons.
  • Avoid buying solely because an old profitability screenshot looks attractive.
